Mossman Sprint Triathlon 2014

Mossman Triathlon – Norwalk, Connecticut - July 20, 2014 (Sprint distance)

The only notable item about this race was that Zach had his best run to-date, but they didn’t count T2 or the run. One of the volunteers on the run course directed some of us the wrong way, adding additional mileage onto our run. As a result, the only fair method to determine awards was to turn it into an Aquabike and only count the swim, T1, and bike.

This was upsetting for me, because I did the math and altered for those of that did different mileage, and if they had counted the run, I would have made it on the podium. Oh well. There are no “if”s in triathlon! It is what it is.

Swim I was queued up in my swim corral when I heard athletes behind me talking about the shortened swim course. I spun my head around and said, “What?! They shortened the course? To what? When?!” One athlete said he had heard the announcement a short time ago, and another told me she heard it was shortened to 1170m. We stood there looking out to the water, as rain continued to steadily fall. Sure enough, after 3 yellow buoys, there was now a red turn buoy.  We had the luck of watching the pro men and women start their races, and watched as, sure enough, they all turned at that red buoy.  I personally heard no announcements, and had seen no course updates pushed through the Ironman tracker app when I checked right before turning in my phone with my morning clothes bag.  As I inched toward the start line, I was 30 seconds away from starting my race when a volunteer announced to everyone standing within earshot that the course was shortened and pointed out our first turn buo...

2023 IRONMAN 70.3 Western Massachusetts - Zach's Race Report

The inaugural  IRONMAN 70.3 Western Massachusetts  was on June 11 2023! With the help of Jane and Dave watching the boys, Katie and I decided to both race this event. Figuring out our race schedules this year was a bit of a puzzle; with 2 kids, work, Brady's school, summer camp, Katie's World Championships in Finland, etc.. We hadn't raced together since 2019 Ironman 70.3 Ohio. I was excited to share a course again. TL;DR - I smashed it. PRs all around and took an hour off my 70.3 personal record. I finally went sub 6 hours, which had started to feel impossible in previous years :( I did not beat the overall TriDot prediction but beat the swim, bike, and run predictions. So I would have beat the overall prediction if TriDot was aware of the insanely long transitions. I went into this race feeling confident in a personal record but not sure if I'd FINALLY go sub 6 hours, or get near the estimated TriDot time of 5:29. Mossman Sprint Triathlon - July 10, 2016 - Katie's Race Report

SWIM At the water's edge, with less than a minute to go, waiting for the bullhorn to sound our start, a woman looked over at me and said, "Didn't I meet you at the Wilton Y?" "Maybe. I'm Katie." She said, "I'm Flo." "Oh, yes, yes, yes! Sorry I didn't recognize you in your cap and goggles!" This woman is a retired professional long course triathlete, who all the women in the Wilton Y pool said I needed to speak to when I asked if they knew of any swim coaches. When I finally met the infamous Flo one morning In the locker room - after seeing her Ironman bag and asking which course she raced - she was friendly, but seemed somewhat disinterested in coaching due to having a newborn at home, and an understandably stringent schedule.
